Where the Heck is Wall Drug?
From Muller's Magical Mystery Tour in Wall, United States on Apr 07 '08
We continued west through South Dakota heading toward Wall, South Dakota along interstate I-90, amongst the bare, flat landscape. Several pheasant were seen right along the roadside, some turkey and the occasional cow. However, more interestingly, what we began to see where billboards for the wold famous Wall Drug Store. What is Wall Drug? It is basically a tourist attraction in Wall, SD, that began as a small family owned pharmacy in 1931. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_Drug and http://www.walldrug.com/ for more information, but basically as a marketing move, they advertised "free ice water" along the interstate to attract weary travelers. (Today these can be seen from as far as 300 miles away; Wall drug is advertised at the South Pole, and along buses in England) Well, it worked and today it has grown from it's humble beginnings to a mall-like structure complete w/ free ice water, food, souvenirs, and of course pharmaceuticals. Wall Drug has been featured on many TV shows, including Good Morning America, The Today Show and FoodTV to name a few. Wall, SD is a town of about 818 people (as of the 2000 census) and charming.
