What I've learned in Japan
From Here I go.... in Matsuyama, Japan on Jul 21 '07
OK so nothing too crazy happened on this section of my trip to Japan. We spent some lovely time with Rika in Matsuyama and got a chance to relax a bit. The Matsuyama castle should be on everyone's itinerary if you are close and Sushi Train (the sushi on the conveyor belt where you pick what you want) is a great experience. Check out the picture for what Nick was adventurous enough to eat. I'm pretty sure these squid actually swan their way into his stomach. Instead of details I'm going to summarize some important things I've learned in this wacky country. Nick please feel free to add anything I've missed.
1. People pay for things in cash, although good luck finding an ATM.
2. Don't worry about the large amounts of cash you are carrying, there is no crime.
3. Japanese post office employees are sent by God to help travellers.
4. Fireworks are legal, I think, but the police will still request you stop shooting off the big rockets. Related to this, attempting to stage a fireworks show for the benefit of the passing train will bring the police with the abovementioned request.
5. "Hey do you want to go to a mixed onsen?" Is not a pick-up line that actually works.
6. Japan is overly clean and polite but men are welcome to piss in plain view anywhere they want.
7. If it ever lived in the ocean, the Japanese will eat it- usually raw.
8. A Japanese soccer mom has two children with her, on her bike.
9. You can buy anything you've ever wanted from a vending machine.
10. Japanese technology is light years ahead of the west. They make ice cream cones pre-packaged where the cone is still crispy.
