What a terrible place.  We hated it the first time and it was even worse the second.  We had no choice but to arrive here at 5 in the morning and it was super sketchy!  The only bus from Trujillo to here arrived at 5 AM so we really had no choice even though we knew it would be a bad time.  As soon as we turned into town there were about fifteen taxis following the bus ready to pounce.  The second we stepped off we had fifteen taxi drivers and like thirty moto-taxi drivers yelling at us that they could get us to Ecuador for cheap.  We knew they were all trying to scam us and we couldn´t trust any of them so we decided to walk the block and a half to the other station.  Literally it was only about 100 yards and we knew right where to go having been there before.  It was the main street and well lit so we figured we´d be ok walking and definitely better off than trusting some shady taxi driver/scam artist.  We hadn´t gone fifty feet when two Police 4x4´s screeched up next to us and told us to get in the truck.  Now we were in a real quandry.  The police were telling us that we were being followed by people about to rob us (which I think was true) but many of the police down here are as corrupt as a lot of the criminals.  The two cops were decked out in bullet proof vests and the one driving had a shotgun across his arm and the one riding shotgun had an AK-47 machine gun.  We decided not to argue and hopped in the bed of the truck with the thought that if they turned off the main street anywhere we would jump out and run, leaving our bags behind.  Fortunately nothing quite that dramatic happened.  The van that had been creeping along behind us took off and the cops drove us right to the station and escorted us in.  We thanked them profusely and were both enormously relieved to have been picked up by honest cops.  We made it out at 8AM and crossed into Ecuador with no problems.  We´re so glad to be back...
