CJ Says: TBD
We were feeling really fortunate as we sailed off from phi phi 6 hours earlier than had planned. Josh had caught a cold and we were both beginning to feel the effects of what would be mild food poisioning. Everything was going fine (well except watching Robbie William's live concert on tv) until the only other foreigner on the boat bust into our nicely air conditioned cabin to tell the captain something. Slowly we begin to think - ok, something isn't totally kosher so we turn our heads and are met with billows of smoke coming in from the engine room. Uh - fire on a boat - not good - panic ensues right? Nope - the thai people on the boat don't seem fussed at all - people start opening windows and continue with their blank stares. So when in rome, Josh turns to me and asks - do we have travelers insurance darling? We then have a lovely discussion about if we have enough time to dig up our dry bag before we sink and how long we would have to tread water before we are saved. If only I could handle all other life crises with such grace! Somehow we manage to keep moving sans fire and even Robbie manages to finish his unending list of pop songs and Chicken island peaks into view signaling that we were 15 minutes out from Krabi. Thank goodness - we made it... except for the smoke starts up again and this time - no amount of tinkering will fix it. Luckily a ferry boat picks us up and we sail away from our old ship as it sits forlornly on the sea billowing out smoke. Thank god for land - we made it and that's enough misadventure for a trip thank you! We had four nights in Ao Nang where we stayed at the lovely Somkiet Buri resort. We spent most of our time lounging at the pool, eating cheap and lovely thai food and getting thai massages. You can have a great life in Thailand - and that's probably what attracks all the Danish, Swedish, German and some British to this area. I have never seen so many blond tall people concentrated anywhere - so guys and gals take note if blondes are your thing - and as a interesting foot note, they carry their habit of topless sunbathing here too and unlike the bay to breakers it's not only the old and saggy naturalists who partake! Oddly, AoNang is about 70% muslim population and most thai people culturally are very conservative in public displays of affection and dress. I wonder what they think of us "farangs" overrunning their town. One thing that I have always found odd - is that "lady boys" seem to fit perfectly in with Thai culture - I don't think they suffer any alienation from thai's and it's rather progressive. We weren't all lazy - we took a elephant trek and joined a thai cooking class. The elephant trek was incredible - to be so up close and personal with these giant gentle animals is unreal. If you close your eyes you can imagine how old kings and maybe Indiana Jones have made difficult journeys through forest lands! The best part was feeding them bananas which they would take with their dexterous trunks - so cute - unfortunately the don't fit in my suite case. In cooking class we made from scratch red, yellow, green and penang curry which is the base of a lot of thai dishes. We also made pad thai and some soups - if was a lot of fun and the food turned out way better than expected! Definitely need to go home and experiment. After 12 days in Thailand - we were sad to leave. The people are so nice and happy - never have we had someone give us their fish they were going to eat for supper or climb up a tree to pick a ripe papaya for us on vacation. The water is bath water warm and crystal clear and beaches go on for miles - how can you not want to come to Thailand. The one thing I will miss is the Thai massages - for 10 dollars you can have someone melt away any knots for an hour - that's not something you can find at home.
