Since we took a ferry to Puerto Montt instead of straight to Castro in Chiloe, we had a chance to see a little of what Puerto Montt had to offer, which is not much. So, we decided to skip the large city of Puerto Montt and went straight to Puerto Varas, located by the huge Lago Llanquihue with the towering, picturesque Volcan Osorno looming in the distance. Finding a cheap hostel here was definitely a challenge, it seems that we had to search the entire city before settling for a place with 10 or maybe more bunk beds poorly spread out in a tiny little room. But the price was good and we have stayed at much worse places, so we were happy just to put the bags down and go in search of some much needed food. Puerto Varas is an excellent town to enjoy some of Chile´s most amazing volcanoes (the area is just jammed packed with them). Not only is the surrounding area breathtaking, the city is also equally impressive. You can spend a whole day walking around town admiring the old mansions, churches and parks.
