Arthur's Seat
From A Chapter in Edinburgh in Edinburgh, United Kingdom on Oct 03 '07
I had intended to go climb Arthur's Seat, the massive volcanic rock in Edinburgh, for several weeks. When I first got to Edinburgh, I had some acute foot pain from combining a bad pair of shoes with a lot of walking. Kiera and some of my other friends had already been but since I was not feeling 100% I decided to wait. I knew the view was going to be spectacular so I especially wanted to go on a beautiful sunny day. One such day finally came, and since I had a huge gap in between classes (12-5pm) I decided that I would venture out by myself. It hadn't really gotten cold in Edinburgh yet, but expecting the summit to be very cold I pulled my heavy coat out of the wardrobe, put on my trainers and excitedly headed towards Holyrood park. The grass in Hollyrood is thick and long, making the ground feel like a lumpy fluffy bed. If the grass is caught up in the wind, it waves and sways in swirling patterns like grain. Being a Texas girl, I carefully waded through the thick grass as if a copperhead snake would appear. This is rather amusing considering that, as I later found out, there are no dangerous or large snakes in Scotland. The main path to the top of Arthur's seat curves around the side that faces the city and Pollock halls. It is rocky but for most of the journey the rocks are organized into stone steps. When I put my heavy coat on, it did not occur to me how warm my body would become when I was climbing.
I knew I forgot something!
