Finally our Journey began in Rio de Janeiro on March 19th and it was well worth it! I must say i had some reservations about Rio but they were quickly dispelled within a day. We had booked into a really nice area of Rio called Botafogo which we would recommend to anybody. The trip from the airport took us through some really interesting areas but when we arrived at our destination we had a really nice hostel. We were a bit tired after travelling for 24 hrs so the first day was a bit of a blur. Also it was 30 degrees and very humid. However we did get to venture to the Botanic Gardens to walk off the Jet lag.

The next day took us all around Rio where we visited the famous sites including Sugar Loaf Mountain, Christ the Redeemer and a brief trip to the Maracana stadium and the street where the Carnaval was held. It was definitely a worthwhile experience. On the 2nd day we took to the famous Cococabana beach after arranging our bus trip out of Rio which was sorted after some communication issues. It is definitely worth booking your departure ahead of time so you are not under pressure on the day. I must say i was not impressed by the pollution of the Cocacabana beach but overall it is well worth a visit.

Overall Rio has a lot to offer. It has a super bus service to get around and really friendly people. We had no trouble at all but we generally stayed within our area after dark. However we didn`t get to visit the Favelas even though we passed through quite a few of these areas while travelling around Rio. Time caught up with us and it was one trip we did miss out on. Overall we would recommend Rio to anybody as it is well worth a visit while in South America. Next stop is Puerto Iguacu.
