Vimy Ridge and Voyage towards Normandy
From Northern France and Belgium in Vimy, France on Jul 27 '07
Vimy Ridge...it's almost impossible to describe. Once we got our car and we were on the highway it was very very VERY easy to find. I don't think there is much to say about the monument. It was amazing and it was weird to think that I had been there once before when I was a little kid. We spent a few hours there, looking at the monument and wandering around the ridge, through the trenches and checking out the cemeteries.
If you haven't already, go see it...
After exploring the Ridge we got back into our car a went off towards Juno Beach. The drive was supposed to be about three hours and we didn't leave the ridge until 10ish. About two hours into the drive we were getting tired and decided to set up our camp in a rest-stop/campsite. It was actually a really great place to stop, the traffic noise was pretty bad at some times and it rained and it got a little swampy but it was free and there were washrooms with running water on site. Almost perfect!
It pissed down rain that night, and the tent wasn't as waterproof as we would have liked, but that's life. We were up by 8 the next morning and on the road around 8:30.
