Monday ... ready to leave
From Charleston, SC in October, 2007 in Charleston, United States on Oct 21 '07
Monday. We were planning to leave today. Mom and Denny pulled out around 9am, on their way to FL for the Winter, with a stop in St. Augustine for the night. I had 2 newsletters to put out on Tuesday, and they were ready except for one last article in each. The interviews I needed for each was delayed, so rather than try to drive the 5+ hours home, then scarmble to put the issues together, we decided to extend our stay for one more day.
That's probably one of the best things about the freedom we have to be and work from wherever we are.
She called the police who discovered the license tag had been stolen from OH and the motorhome from LA.
Around 3pm our new 'neighbors' pulled into the space that Mom and Denny were in. You can never judge travelers from their rigs or initial looks. Let's face it, I don't look so good after a long day or 2 on the road. But in this case a judgement was in order. After an hour or so 2 police cars showed up and parked behind the 1980's era motor home with Ohio tags.
They just waited there for about 3 hours til the couple came back from fishing in the lake. When they did show up, the police sat them both down on the picnic bench for a while, then cuffed the man and put him in the squad car, then drove him away. The woman stayed behind with one of the officers.
We eventually learned that the man tried to pass a bad check for his camping stay and then for a bunch of miscellaneous stuff at the camp store. The store clerk thought something was wrong and called the bank, who said 'NSF' on the check. She called the police who discovered the license tag had been stolen from OH and the motorhome from LA.
After a while a taxi arrived for the woman and took her who-knows-where. Then a 50-ton tow truck (way overkill) pulled up and dragged the motor home away.
So that was our excitement for the evening. We sat out by our fire with our beverages, Mac and Cody... still missing our Abagail terribly. Ordered pizza and canollis from NYPD (a pizza place) and it was amazingly good.
Tomorrow we will leave around 9am. The newsletters are scheduled to be emailed around 10, and that's automatic so I won't need to stop to transmit them. It was a mixed trip because of our Abagail, but certainly a trip to remember.
