I am not one to get seasick. I have spent plenty of time on the water in one type of craft or another. However, the trip from San Jorge to Moyogalpa had me churning. All these waves, on a lake no less!  But the views were worth all the turmoil, a horizon of volcanoes erupting with fluffy, marshmallow clouds.

The island is circled by a road, if you can call it that. There is a small paved section, but most is a chaotic mess of dust, potholes and boulders. It takes you everywhere that you need to get to though and we endured the long, bumpy bus ride around to Mérida by gazing out over the surroundings.

There are numerous hikes to be attempted here, and we opted for a bike ride/hike combo to the San Ramon waterfall. The sign said 3k, but I’m telling you that it’s a lot closer to 5, maybe even 6. The path is steep and a good section is without shade and no water. The waterfall itself is not wildly picturesque; so if you are going just to see it, don’t bother. However, the hike was a good solid one and after convincing the park staff to let us take our bikes past the gate and up the hill (as far as we could manage), the ride back was downhill, fast and breezy.
