Tayrona National Park
From Buenos Knockers Señor Rooter in Tayrona National Park, Colombia on Feb 26 '07
Well was a bit of stuffing around to get there including the oldest taxi we have ever seen and then a 40 minute walk through muggy rain forest but upon our first view of the beaches of Tayrona we knew it was all worth it. Prior to leaving we had read online that a prominent English newspaper had voted it the second best beach in the world and seeing it I have to say he can't be far wrong, great white stretches of beach with giant boulders strewn about the place and stunning bluey green water, plus relatively untouched for a beach of such natural beauty (being in a national park they can't develop it thank God).
Unfortunately we couldn't stop at the first place we saw as it was unsafe for swimming so had to hike a further 45 minutes along the beach and rainforest to get to a safe swimming beach which had a campsite, small restaurant and rented hammocks for cheap, so got them to throw up a couple of hammocks and spent the next two nights sleeping in hammocks on the beach. Days were spent sleeping in, lying around on the beach, swimming and eating seafood, not a bad way to spend a couple of days.
On the hike back to the main road we stupidly stopped to pat a dog who decided to follow us for the next hour and a half...well follow is the wrong word as he led us down all the correct paths and looked confused when i deliberately chose a path different to his which inevitably turned out to be the wrong one. Just when we thought the dog might jump on the bus with us, he latched on to some other tourists and headed back the other way...turns out old Lucas is a park celebrity and takes his guide dog job quite seriously hence the confused looks every time I second guessed him. Well that was it for Tayrona couldn't confirm if it is the second best beach in the world but definitely has a lot going for it.
