The Planning

From My Yucatan Travel in Charlotte, United States on Dec 20 '05

Like I said, it is all Byron’s fault. Ever since I watched his DVD photo show of his Europe backpacking trip, I wanted to do something similar. Just buy a ticket board the plan and go somewhere. I was talking to Pedro and Mariu about Mexico. Mariu recently went on a trip to the Cancun area all by herself. And along came this incredible offer from US Airways to Cancun. So I bought the ticket for Dec 23: From Charlotte to Cancun.

I had some ideas on what I wanted to do in Mexico. After talking to Mariu, it was clear to me that it wasn’t Cancun where I wanted to spend my time. I wanted to see the Mayan ruins and the real country side of Mexico. Mariu advised me to take a bus from Cancun to Valladolid, a small colonial town in the middle of the Yucatan Peninsula. Pedro told me to take a first class bus because it is faster and does not stop anywhere. But Mariu’s recommendation was to take a second class bus. That way you will see the real people and real Mexico.

I had no hotels reservations. I was planning to wing it.  Here is the tentative plan:

23 Dec: Arrive in Cancun

Bus to Valladolid. Spend a couple of days there. Visit Chichen Itza etc.

25 Dec: Coba on the way to Tulum

25 Dec:Tulum. Spend a day.

26 Dec: Off to Cancun via Playa Del Carmen

May be a side trip to Cozumel. Stay there.

27 Dec: Cozumel - to Cancun to Isla Mujares

27 Dec: See Isla Mujares and then to Cancun

Shop, Walk, Party

28 Dec: Bus to Aeropuerto... and back to Charlotte..

I have been troubled by a stomach flu or something. I may have to cancel the trip if it gets worse.
