Denmark - Copenhagen
From EURO-TRIP 2007 in Copenhagen, Denmark on May 20 '07
We touched down in Denmark International Airport. It is caotic as ever. There is so many people scattered all over. We follow signs to baggage claims. We walk which seems like 15 mins through shops and people and corridors , then find our baggage claim carousel. Collect our luggages without any problems. We decide on a taxi. So head to the taxi stand and instantly get the next one available. All the taxis are Mercedes . We get a driver who was abit of a hoon as he speeds through the traffic, tail gatting everyone and overtaking. It was a little odd for a taxi driver. The city is about 15 mins drive to the city. We arrive at Hotel Copenhagen. The taxi fare came to 150kr which is $30. We checked into our room which was comfy. Small but comfy. We drop our bags and head downstairs to check out the nearby streets. It’s a quiet area but there are plenty of cafes and sandwich stores. We grab some munchies from the local convenience store. We take a stroll through the streets and head for the city. Our accom is close by the waters and there are plenty of people laying about on the green lawns, enjoying the sun.
Luckily we ask a local for directions as we were headed the wrong way. Getting our bearings right we walk for about 10 mins and find ourselves in central Copenhagen. Wonderful looking city. So many people on bikes and so many wonderful buildings. We pop into Sam’s Pub for a drink. They have karaoke playing in the background. Just a small pub. The service wasn’t fantastic but we got served in the end. We moved fro there and headed and explore the city. We had our first Danish hot dog which I recommend to anyone. It is packed with onions, pickles. Sauces. Great cheap feed and u’ll find these hot dog stands in every corner or Copenhagen. We sit on these seats facing towards the roundabout. Im really impressed with this city. We are tired from the day so get back by taxi to our hotel which was 70kr. It’s 10pm and its still light. I’m loving it as it means you can stay out much much later.
I could easily live in Copenhagen
SECOND DAY IN COPENHAGEN
We wake up and head over to town. Go over the main bridge and onwards to HC Anderson which is the main street of Copenhagen. It took a while for us to get our bearings right but we got there in the end. We head to book our hotel and could not be bothered with doing a whole walk around town so basically decided on the first hotel we found which was Copenhagen Square. For $500 it was pricey but we decided that the last night in Copenhagen would be spent in style. With all our accommodation now set til when we leave we can just easily enjoy our stay . We go on a mission to find the meeting point for where the tour bus leaves. For 130kr we hopped on a tour bus that goes on for 1.5 hrs. It took us through the city inclusive of the queen’s palace. The bus gives us about 20mins before it leaves for the next stop. So we all get off and head over to the massive palace where lucky Princess Mary lives and view the changing of the guards. The bus then moves onwards to The Little Mermaid statue. It was hard to get a decent photo as everyone was jump next to it grabbing photos. I got plenty of pics with random people in the shot. But… I got the pic of the mermaid, so mission again accomplished. The coach then goes through the city and soon its back to the pick up point. Ed and I leave and head over to the outdoor café which I thought was beaut. I ordered pizza and enjoyed my meal under the sun. Grab a few postcards and wrote some out. It was such a simple thing but I was loving it.
We head to the shopping district and head into Streckers for a drink and a chat. It was a nice bar with chandeliers and a relax feel to it. We continue to write postcards whilst enjoying a few pints. Head through the city in search of a post office. With the help of a local, we find it successfully. Send off our plenty postcards to those at home in oz. We decided to head back to the hotel to rest up. We stop over at the Her Er Ro pub. The barman was pleasantly nice and was even drinking whilst serving.
We leave that bar and walk back to our hotel for a rest. Our rest only lasted for 1hr and then we were off once again. On the walk back into the city, we stop in Café Langebro which is also a bar. We grab and drink and sit outside and enjoy the scenery. The bar is only 2mins from our hotel and its filled with locals. Tonight we have plans to head into the Vodka Icebar, so we make tracks and find it after stopping a young lady to get directions. We originally thought she was a local but after speaking she recognise our accents and asked where we were from. It turns out she was a student living in Denmark for a year and she is from Sydney, very close by to where we live. Funny to be over the other side of the world and run into someone that lives so close to you. We head to the entry of the icebar and the entry fee is 150kr and it includes 1 cocktail. Extra cocktails are 85kr. Prior to entering we chatted to the workers and they decked us out in this garments, which look like something a wizard would wear. We are lead to a entry door and the sliding doors open and we head through. It was amazing as I thought it would be. Freezing cold naturally and even with the garments I was still freezing cold. There were 3 others already in the bar all sitting on the ice made seats. We head to the bar and grab our cocktails. Which were served in ice made shot glasses. Chatted to a few of the other guest. Took plenty of pics although I didn’t want to take my gloves off because my fingers were already numb with them on. We lasted for 30 mins and it was all that we could take, so we left but with some great photos. It was a great novelty. Expensive, but worth it. We walked about town and decided to head back to the Her Er Ro bar. It was packed but we squeeze into a table. The soccer match was on and Liverpool LC and ACM were playing therefore the pubs were packed and filled with supporters. We watched the match to the end and headed home after. Another night in Copenhagen and I was loving it.
24th May Thursday –
We lay in bed til about noon . It’s a late wake up but its all good. We head into town and find the information centre to try and get ourselves to Carlsberg Factory. It gets to difficult so we dismiss the whole idea and head into city. We head into an outdoor canal pub. They had sunbeds and it was a great way to relax and enjoy a drink whilst watching the boats go by on the canal. We enjoy a couple of drinks there. We headed to The Dubliner, and seat ourselves outside and enjoy the scene whilst enjoying a drink. It was a nice irish pub with plenty of people also enjoying drinks. Our next stop was O’s Bar. It was a restaurant but had a couple of chairs outside, so we sit there for a few drinks. I get hungry so we head to trusty old McDonalds but for the 15kr I was able to get a cheeseburger supreme which has jalepeno peppers my favourite. They also serve chicken wings which was well hooked on. After getting a bite to eat, we take a stroll to Nylan Lane which is a street filled with restaurants and nicely painted and colourful buildings. Its on the canal and its extremely beautiful. We head to McJoy’s Pub and enjoy some cidars. Then head to The Irish Rover and and listen to the the local bands playing. We leave that bar and head to The Viking House. The barman is really friendly. Ed drinks up a storm and continues to request songs to be played on the dukebox. We chat with the barman til it was time to go to another bar. The last pub for the night was The Scottish Pub. They have live music playing and it’s a relax atmosphere with the seats outside facing HC Anderson main road. We end the night and take a taxi back to the hotel. It was a great night of some serious bar hopping. They have great bars and pubs here in Copenhagen.
Friday 25th May –
It’s a late wake up today. We don’t get up til 2pm. We head into the city by foot and check out Louis Tassuds wax museum. As we entered I start creeping out and wondered why I even came as I have a fear of wax figures. They creep me out. We walk through the first part which is filled with leaders like George Bush, etc. As we head through , we head into the Royal Family room and see models of Princess Mary. We were in there for about 45mins. Got plenty of pictures but I chickened out when we got to the horror part and exit and got Ed to go through by himself. After the museaum we head to O’leary pub nearby. The service here was pretty poor as the barman were completely ignoring us and we had to stand by the bar for about 15mins , then had to go to the end of the bar to actually get someones attention. The prices were overpriced and so we had one drink and couldn’t wait to bail., Slow service just drives me mental. Especially if its not even busy.
We find another pub being the Old Irish pub. This place a lot more friendlier and we were served straight away. We enjoy a couple of Kilkenny. I decided lunch will be a cheeseburger supreme at Maccas. After lunch, we head into the city square and wander over to Zoo Bar. It was a great bar, filled with plenty locals. We sat down by the seats near the windows and enjoy a couple of drinks. Then it was on the move once again as we strolled along Stroget Street, the main street where the shops are located and relax on the bench. We head into a church to hear some music as there was a free performance for the public. It was relaxing but we felt it was putting us to sleep so we head off and find a nice spot for dinner. We find a nice Thai Restaurant and had a wonderful meal with great wine. The restaurant closes at 10pm but they stayed open till 11pm , the time we left. We stumble back to the hotel from the city and pack our bags for tomorrow to change hotels for the last night in Copenhagen.
Saturday 26th May –
Wake up at 10.30am and check out of Hotel Copenhagen which was a great stay. It’s a little out of the city but everything is a walking distance. We grab a taxi as our packs are way too heavy to walk 10mins to the city where our new hotel is. We check into Copenhagen Square hotel which is right in the heart of the city. Its 5 star and very luxurious. We get our keys and soon head up to the room and are very much stoked to see that it look onward to the main city square. The windows are huge and the room is comfortable. The bathroom was insane and the tiles were even heated. We drop our bags off and head to grab something to eat. I grab a Danish hot dog from one of the stands. I’m definitely hooked on them. We grab a few other goodies in 7 eleven. We head back to the hotel and do nothing but watch TV. It’s a cloudy and raining. There is a carnivale show in the main street but we had the best views as we could see the parade from our window. I grab my camera and filmed the parade. We planned to head around town and see other parts of the city. The rain was putting damper on that idea and because the room was so comfortable, we were happy to spend it indoors and watch the view from our room. At 9pm we went out to grab some food fir dinner. I grab a chinese box. Head back to the room and drink red wine purchased from 7/11. We enjoy our last night in Copenhagen in the hotel room but for some reason, we didn’t really mind.
