I had been to the UK several times, but never made the trip down to Amesbury.  Mom pointed the car west away from the city heat and toward one of the oldest structures still standing [even older than the great pyramids of Giza!].  I played navigator and searched the horizon for a sign of our destination.  Suddenly, over the rise and off to one side appeared a very familiar sight.  A distinctive circle of stones appeared amidst the English countryside.  We parked across the street and had to take an underground pedestrian walkway to get to the monument.  We were supplied with audio devices like those found in museums to guide us through 5000 years of history [and pre-history?].  Despite the crowd, the site was eerily quiet, except for the flocks of ravens periodically cawing and flying about.  Visitors are generally not allowed to touch the structures or even get too close, except for specific times when "Stone Circle Access" is permitted. See www.english-heritage.org.uk for details.

Next stop: the city of Bath.
