Lover's Holiday-Euro Style
From Lover's Holiday-Euro Style in Crete, Greece on Jul 14 '01
How do? Ladies & gentlemen,
This report brought to you by Grecian Formula 101, the real Grecian formula for getting rid of grey hair. First, some clear, blue(& crisp)Mediterranean waters, clear skies with mountain vistas, steady, dry breezes and pure olive oil for those afternoon naps when everything closes down. I am enchanted by Crete, while Ela recovered from Asian air, I took to the mountain roads on a new dirt bike. Early morning (relatively early) rides through the panoramic countryside and lunch in remote mountain villages after hiking through gorges is my idea of valium. Now some of you may be wondering what I've got to be tense about. I'd have to agree. Let's just say I'm building up a storehouse of harmony for the future. So what is Greece like? It's uncomfortable, small wood chairs, cute kids riding their bikes through narrow streets at night, fresh salads with olive oil that puts taste buds in high gear, elder ladies in their inevitable garb of black sitting on the sidewalk, night breezes that whip through cafe lined avenues, tight tops, dresses & bottoms regardless of degree of fitness, jewelry stores that open as art galleries only after 7:00PM, mountains that drop into the sea, well, that's a start anyway. Each day I must answer the question; read, write or drink? Of course the order changes constantly. You walk in the street constantly here, the sidewalks are filled with tables, chairs, plants in beautiful pots, tress that grow together, little kids speaking Greek, German, Italian using their parents as trampolines & monkeybars. This means you develop a high degree of auditory sense for rear coming vehicles, bikes, scooters, cars, etc. Being on holiday means spending inordinate amounts of time at post card racks, watching sunglass styles, and studying historical sites that the locals know little about. We have designed our own form of LaStone therapy, placing the hot (& I mean hot!) basalt stones on our chakras while we bask in the ovenlike pebble beaches here. They are less crowded and with the wind here, a less sand blasted way to go. No worry for bathing suit styles, just walk a little further along the beach. We take each day as it comes and offer little back in activity but recompensate in gratitude, relaxation and friendliness. Hey, someone has to keep the balance! Our latest friends were 3 lovely lasses from London town on bachlorette holiday. Met them on the boat to Palehora and the bride to be is a surfer,(from England!) Ela and Sally had an instant rapport and Katie, the news correspondent, & Sam, hairdresser, (girl's best friend) Found the outdoor disco at the edge of town (and the Sea) after liberal libations on a moonlit night at a table in the street. All of us under a moon shining on the shimmering water while we danced under the strobe lights. The wind mixed with our laughter and sweat is a memory we'll recall fondly. Ela is really getting those Balinese dance moves down. Of course we had to show them Thai massage & Watsu the next day before they flew out simply for recovery's sake. Ela showed her infamous back walking techniques to the bride to be with honeymoon instructions. Some things can't be taken for granted I guess. They were great people to hook up with and they are sure of one thing, their friendship, and that gives one a confidence you can find no other place. Their courtesy and cheekiness were in ample supply and we were honored to be part of their girls week out. We're off to Elafonsi Beach tomorrow and after that,?? perhaps IOS isle. Hope all is well in the land of liberty and your friends know how you feel about them. We love you all.
The magical, Zeusical, whimsical campaign of comradarie continues. Stay tuned.
Your humble planet dwellers,
Ela & dwight
