This Winter Break 20 volunteers from the United States and the United Kingdom have flown into  Belize to work with us in San Ignacio to help make a difference for the students at St Andrews School in San Ignacio, Belize. The volunteers are refurbishing the school including building partitions for classrooms that are currently separated by chalk boards, painting the school, and repairing woodwork.

The majority of the volunteers are from Sacramento City College, in Sacramento, CA. The group has worked hard to raise money for the project and the cultural and adventure activities that are part of the program.

This week has involved a LOT of hard work. The orginal classroom were divided only by chalkboards, leading to a noisy learning environment!

ProBelize, whose mission is to promote social and economic development, empower communities, and cultivate educated compassionate global citizens, has been working with St Andrews school for the past few years. Other projects have included sports and arts and crafts Summer camps for the students during their vacation; renovations of the St Andrews School library, cataloging nearly 1300 donated books and creating a school reading program; creation of an after school reading and art program and a mural for the school; and volunteers have also worked as teaching assistants at the school, taking a lot of pressure off the already strained resources at the school.
