On entering Morocco we made our way by grande taxi (a cab that squishes six passengers into a four-passenger stationwagon) to Chefchaouen a gorgeous town nestled into the foothills of the Rif mountains. The scenery on the way was totally unexpected. Lush, green, fertile hills covered in a patchwork of cultivated fields.

Chefchaouen itself was the perfect introduction to Morocco. A bite-size old medina painted blue, with ancient doors, lazy cats and quaint shops. The central square proved perfect for eating, drinking and watching the procession of local musicians and old men in long, hooded cloaks gathering to chat out front of the kasbah.

Chefchaouen is one of those places that cannot fail to charm

Chefchaouen is one of those places that cannot fail to charm even the most jaded traveler. Everyone is friendly, especially the hash hustlers :), it's serene, relaxed and the shades of blue that cover the houses in the medina just add to its soothing atmosphere.

Andrew and I climbed to a ruined mosque on a small hill overlooking the town, for a great vista of Chef with its little sugar cube houses cascading down the hill. I'd go back to Morocco just to hang in Chef for a few more days.
