In 122 A.D. the Roman Emperor Hadrian had a wall built stretching from coast to coast [73 miles] dividing Roman conquered England from the Scottish tribes in the north. Birdoswald Fort adjoins the longest surviving segment of this ancient wall. Okay, it's not exactly Times Square on New Year's Eve, but it speaks well of a culture that would preserve such a large artifact of it's history for almost 1900 years. The grounds are pastoral, with wide green fields dotted with clumps of rapeseed and a small herd of cows munching contentedly around the fortifications.
A nifty little chair carved out of a tree stump.
