Today we drove from Myvatn to Akureyri, which could have been a short drive if it wasn´t for a couple of factors.  I love how every day is a surprise.  When we wake up in the morning we make a vague plan of what we would like to see and do, but it can be changed so easily by outside and inside forces!  I think it is very important to remain flexible when traveling and to not let the hassels get you down.

On our way to Akureyri we stopped at Goðafoss, a very pretty waterfall.  The legend is a man (forgive me for not remembering his name, I probably could not have spelled it anyway) threw in figures of his pagan gods there when he decided Iceland should be a Christian country.  The water was a lovely sea-green in the area and you can park practically on top of the falls - not much walking to be done if you are feeling lazy.  As it happens, we were lazy and didn´t stay long.  But as we got on the road again to travel onwards, we found it blocked by a police car.  Apparently there was some sort of accident with a fuel truck and there was a spillage that needed to be clened up - so we were stuck for about two hours.  I consider us lucky to be stuck in such a nice place on a sunny day!  We drove back to the waterfall and this time really had time to walk up and down both banks, sit and contemplate the falls...the way these wonders should be seen.  I realize that sometimes as we travel we are so concerned with fitting a lot into each day, that we see everything too fast.  My sister and I planned this trip for awhile and I think it is important that we really enjoy seeing things while we are here.  So what happened today was a good reminder to me to take my time more.

While we were there we also went into their little gift shop/grocery store and had lunch - Icelandic hotdogs, 200 ISK each!  That is like 3 or so American dollars, I believe.  That is pretty much the cheapest meal we have found in Iceland.  Though I usually like to eat vegetarian, I have given it up in this country - food is just so expensive!  Although, now that we are in Akureyri, Jubie and I are going to splurge and go to dinner at a restaurant for the first time since we have gotten here.  Eating out for dinner is more expensive then lunch, but you only live once!

Akureyri is the second largest town in Iceland, 15,000 people, and very scenic.  Despite a wait and some confusion, we are very happy with our accomodation - the nicest room we have stayed in yet, we even have our own private sink and a tv!  We are also looking forward to breakfast tomorrow - they serve it on the top floor, where it is sunny and there is even a terrace to go out on.  We hope for more of the same sunny weather!
