Peace and quiet
From Looking for America in West Branch, United States on Aug 04 '06
This morning, we found our way out of the cornfield (a.k.a. Toledo) and headed north to Detroit. We went by the stadiums, got lost a couple of times, and took a 45-minute detour, but survived downtown. North of Detroit, we went through the little town of Flint, Michigan. Flint was a town we were looking forward to seeing, as we had both watched "Roger and Me", the documentary on the economic downfall of this small industrial town. We wanted to see if it was as bad as it appeared in the movie.

While we were there, we saw a fist fight, met some of the least intelligent people we've ever come across, and learned that some diners apparently still use casing on their hot dogs. We also found out that the restaurant was open 24 hours...on Mondays and Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Thursdays and Fridays and Saturdays and Sundays. You have to see the movie.
We decided it would be a good night to camp, so we looked through a booklet we found at the Welcome Center and chose what seemed to be a good site. We arrived, paid for our site, and bought $15 worth of campfire wood (due to a rare insect problem, you're not allowed to bring your own wood). We had a hard time finding our appointed site, then realized why...it was completely surrounded on all sides by other tents, three feet away from our location. It was absolute mayhem. We'd never seen anything like it. We turned around, got our money back, and headed up to a campground described in the book as "For older retired couples." It was absolutely perfect. Along the way, we saw the prettiest rainbow either of us had ever seen. It was followed by a beautiful sunset under cloudy skies. We spent the night with no problem and in the morning were greeted by a giant wild turkey, just wandering the woods.
