Kusadasi: Ephesus is an Old-Ass City

After slightly recuperating from that early morning hike in Patmos, our next stop was Kusadasi, Turkey where we saw the ruins of Ephesus. It was really cool because it held about 250,000 people in this old old old mini-city. The little city was actually really big back then and they still hold shows in the arena. Shows like Tom Jones! There were parliament buildings and libraries but the thing we were most amused by was the old latrine where there were about 20 holes in the marble and around the whole bathroom there was a moat sort of thing that people can wash themselves in after. They also had live music in the middle to mask the "sounds". Haha. Of course we took pictures of ourselves on the toilets. Outside the ruins, we had to stop and take a picture of the sign outside the real toilets so you must read the sign closely and find out why we were so amused. I think almost everyone in our tour group took a picture with it.

We had some time to explore the town of Kusadasi afterwards where we found another bazaar though it was less harassing than Istanbul’s. Apparently the Turkish guys like to just sit around, smoke and harass people all day to shop in their stores. We walked by and were asked if we dropped something…because it was their heart! Who says that!?

Pigeon Island looked like it might be full of castles but it was full of couples. It was a little island off the port of Kusadasi that we decided to check out. There were some great photo-ops but we felt like we were intruding on a particular couple’s private time. They would pass us every time we would stop to take a picture and we’d catch up to them while they were trying to be romantic. This continued for our walk around the whole island. It was pretty funny for us, probably not so much for them.

We stopped for some snacks with the tour group in the bazaar area and had some really yummy baklava (still not as good as Senem’s mom’s). This kid tried to sell the married Calgary couple a dirty old scale. Who would want to buy some dingy scale is beyond me but I guess the kid was trying to make some extra cash. He almost suckered the guy in, but his wife gave him an “are-you-stupid?” look to stop the madness.
