Today was my first full day in Las Vegas. Jenn finally turned up last night after I had been at the airport for 4 hours. I now know Terminal 1 of McCarran International Airport extremely well! We had a fairly quiet one last night and just went out for some tapas and indulged in a few too many patatas bravas which were reeeeally good!! This morning we did the all-American thing of going for drive thru Starbucks in our pyjamas and joined the queue of a load of other people also partaking in the same thing! We then (after changing out of our pyjamas) went to Red Rock canyon which is really close to Ron’s house. It has beautiful mountains although it was rather hot. Whilst driving in the park we also passed a donkey (which in the guide was called something fancy but I can’t remember what it was now!) who was very charming and posed for a photo for Jenn but unfortunately not for me. Damn donkey. After getting some great Chinese food we ventured to the strip and had a wander around in the heat. We decided however that this was not the best plan and decided to go into a casino instead. We had a brief stop for some champagne (which was far too expensive so we settled for a bellini instead – who would have thought that I would pass up champagne because of something so insignificant as the price?!) before we decided to do something very cultured. I know it’s a strange concept of something being cultured in Las Vegas but believe me we did find something! We went to the Bellagio art centre and saw an exhibition by Ansell Adams which was really good – none of my photos will ever come close to his I’m sure. Predictably the exhibition was almost empty – who needs to see photographs when there are machines with bright lights and noises to draw your attention?! We then wandered around the casino and I saw one guy being thrown out by two bouncers whilst his girlfriend trotted along behind shouting ‘Caleb, I told you this was going to happen!’. She did not look impressed, bless her. We also saw quite a few brides as well. Although I didn’t actually see any grooms. Maybe they were waiting to find one there. Who can say – Vegas is a very strange place! Ron has been trying to explain the rules of poker to Jenn and I but we still have no clue whatsoever about how this game is played. We have got quite excited at the prospect of playing bingo so I think my gambling experience may be limited to this if at all! Hardcore risk taker that I am. Am off to the airport to pick Charlie up soon, hopefully I won’t be waiting around the airport for so long this time. Fingers crossed.

People watching is a facinating pastime but better I find if you have a drink or two behind you which is a bit difficult if you are driving.Mxx

Hi Claire! I just love your photos of Death Valley... very jealous...although we're opff to sunny Cornwall this weekend - so there! Eat your heart out you worldtrekker you. We've got the tent and the windbreak, so all will be well. Amy is now terrified at the prospect of meeting Jaws in the seas around Cornwall, due to global warming - but I told her they weren't all dangerous and she should ascertain just which breed they were before jumping to hasty conclusions and out of the water.Apparently, they are only 'Basking' - much like us on the beach. Take good care of yourself and don't take any more brilliant photos or I shall have to pay someone to steal your camera. luv Valxxx

PS Just who are all these people you are picking up at airports??? Does your Mother know? It's a dreadful habit and potentially very very dangerous. They may rob you/rape you or even steal your camera..... hey every cloud has a silver lining. I did tell you to take care. Valx

Hi. Forgive me for not enthusing too much about Chinese food or maybe it was not authentic; did it lack the salmonella sauce? Will send an e-mail and piccies soon; still catching up. Jim
