It's amazing how every brand of Port you know (and even those you don't) are clustered around this touristy river area of Porto.  You can walk around this very picturesque area, hopping from winery to winery, tasting the goods quite easily.  The area is well done, with good signage, nice walkways, clean sidewalks, and lots of interesting shops and restaurants for taking breaks.

Start on the Porto side, then walk across the foot bridge to the other side of the river, where all of the wineries are located -- about a 20 minute walk.  When you cross the river, you'll be treated to amazing views of the entire river valley.  Don't forget to bring your camera (as we did), because you'll get some great shots!

Overall, I think the tourist part of Porto was very nice, but you can do it in half a day.  Guidebooks trumpet Porto as the second biggest city in Portugal, which is true, but that is misleading in that it implies there are lots of things to see and do there.  Yes, there is the winery area, but it's a bit like Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco -- cute, but very touristy, and not a whole lot to see beyond an hour or two stroll through.  And beyond the tourist area, Porto is VERY gritty -- this is definitely an industrial town.
