Our stay in Warwick was to last two days and in those two days we were determined to see as much as possible.
The first day we took the road back along the I95 and into the town of Mystic, RI. This small town was a lovely historical old place. Trinket shops lined the streets and the old harbour was full of boats and yachts. The surrounding homes of Mystic made us very envious indeed. Beautiful old wooden houses with huge balconies, most overlooking the inlet and ocean. The drawbridge was a special sight as well, and we even managed to be there when it was raised for passing boats. We only stayed for an hour or two but we left with fond memories of this special township. Deciding to leave the Interstate we drove along the coastal roads, stopping off at a beach or two. Our next destination was Newport. I didn't know much about Newport, all of my knowledge pertaining to the America's Cup and Australia's 1983 triumph. Set upon a small island connected by bridges we were pleasantly surprised by the buzz and beauty of the place. The main street was both historical and alive with people while a drive further out to the Mansions provided us with a peak at how the other half live. The massive homes which flanked the Bellevue Ave were astounding - some open to the public, some closed as any home would be. We both found Newport to be one of our favourite places in the whole of New England. The weather certainly helped, but even if dogcrap fell from the skies i would have still liked Newport. The following day we made our way to Providence, the lovely provincial capital of Rhode Island (i think...). The city was lovely to wander around, shop, get a haircut, drink Starbucks and enjoy the lovely, warm weather. Notice how i keep harping on about the weather. It was unbelievable. I was a little sad that i would miss out on the spectacular New England fall, but not that saddened. One building which took my fancy in Providence was the Capitol building. Standing proudly above the city, it truly was a beautiful sight, and to me, quintessentially American. Our stay at Warwick was at an end and the next stop was Massachusetts. This was the reason we came.
