St Maartens is part of a series of island spanning from St Thomas to Trinidad which include St Kitts, Antiqua,Guadeloupe,Dominica,Martinique,St Lucia and Barbados, It is in the Netherland Antilles. This Island has a total area of 37 square miles; 16 square miles on the Dutch side and 21 square miles on the French side. I told Ian it was more mine than his because the French owned more of it than the Dutch. However, 32,000 people live on the Dutch side and only 25,000 live on the French side. But... I told Ian that if all my relatives were to move there we would surely outnumber the Dutch...We had a good laugh. We did look at some shops in St Maartens and most of the ones close to port in the Capital of Philipsburg were all jewelery shops. A lot of people were beelining it there so fast I thought there was a shark scare going on...I later found out that a lot of jewelery is sold to people on cruise ships because many people choose cruises for their anniversaries, weddings, and retirement celebrations and of course a lot of wealthy people who don't know what to do with their money so they buy diamonds. Of course it was'nt the case for us but we did stop to look at some of the local wares. And I did receive a free gold charm bracelet with a coupon given to us from the ship for participating in a jewelery seminar. We were to pick up a free charm in every port but I did not bother because it would take us of our scedule. We also stopped to meet a man who was involved in the creating of Yoda from Starwars. We met him and shook his hand but he wanted 40 dollars to take his picture and I personnaly did not think he was that hot to look at so no way I was forking out that kind of money and I am not even a Starwars fan so I took a pictures of posters in his shop. He was a nice man and Ian enjoyed talking to him until the place got too busy with tourists. Then we headed to explore the place.
