The Mappa Mundi is a view of the world from the perspective of scholars who lived 700 years ago.  Used as a teaching tool, the Mappa Mundi is hand printed on vellum (deer skin) and all the text is written in one hand in Latin and French-Norman.

Nothing like a map of today, some of the places are recognisable nonetheless and a lot of sympolism and graphics are used.  A strange and wonderful thing, it is preserved lovingly in a dark chamber with a constant temperature of 17 degrees.

The chained library houses various texts used by scholars and only because it had fallen into disuse around the time of Elizabeth I has it survived, her edict being that they must take steps to look after it.

The cathedral itself is quite beautiful with many areas to view, and a lovely garden in the rear for tea and cake.
