A Random Thought
From Embarking on the Journey of my Life in Calgary, Canada on Jun 06 '07
I’m writing this entry as I sit down at work on my $9.82 foldable camping chair that I bought from Walmart. As I look up into the sky, half of it is covered in gloomy grey clouds whereas the other half is Sheer Ocean blue and I am sitting on the border line between both with the sun shining down on my back and rain drizzling down in front of me. It had just rained and the storm clouds are advancing through, in the distance I see constant flashes of lightning sparking profusely like a broken electricity pole.
I am thinking about all my blog entries and I don’t think I mentioned much of the unpredictable weather in Calgary. They say there are “Four Seasons in a day” in Melbourne. But over here it’s like Melbourne at its extreme then times it by ten. It can snow, storm, hail, rain, and clear to a flawless blue sky with sunshine all in the one day. A few weeks ago in May when the snow should be melting away, I woke up to the sky’s puking down with snow. I guess this was the cold snap in May that everyone has been talking about. On this day Matt(my Boss) and I drove out of town to Edmonton to work. We were driving through a blizzard and on the side of the roads we saw abandoned cars in ditches dumped with snow, everything was perfect white like a plain canvas and you could barely see 2 metres in front of you. But once we got to Red Deer (a town 3 hours north of Calgary) it seemed like we drove through a portal and into a place of sunshine leaving the snow behind as it stopped snowing completely and the Sun was out in full.
Then there was last week, there was this one day where it was bucketing down rain and I had just finished work, Matt picked me up and as we were driving home we had the wipers in psycho mode and that still wasn’t fast enough to wipe off the rain. Roads were flooded and traffic was mayhem. On the radio there were reports that some cars were actually submerged into floods of water because the drainage system couldn’t handle all the rain. But the funny thing was I saw a Jet Black Ferrari stuck in traffic while the roads were filling up with more and more rain and this Ferrari was driving through the floods and the water level measured right past his windows. The poor guy was almost swimming in his car. It was the only time I could get away with laughing when I see a Ferrari.
But aside from the unpredictable weather the last few days has been gorgeous, mid 20’s all day and the wonderful thing about Calgary is that the sun doesn’t start setting until 10pm so it’s really bizarre to go to bed at 11pm when there is still light outside. I often think its only 7pm when the sun is setting just like back home. But then get a big surprise when I check the time. Summer has finally hit and I absolutely love the hot weather or should I say warm. I’ve found that because its dry heat over here, you don’t sweat as much and tanning in this heat works far better. So I’ve just been adding to my already tanned skin that I got from the first week I started working at my new job. But I wasn’t happy enough with my T-shirt tan, because of the tan lines half way through my biceps. So I ripped of the sleeves on my DECO work T-shirt and made a DECO tank top. The first day I put it into action, I slapped on some sunscreen on my arms all the way up to the tan line and left the rest of my upper arm and shoulders unprotected for the day. By the end of the day my upper arms were lobster red and it stung big time. At least now I don’t have a Tan line on my biceps, but now it’s moved up to my shoulders. I now look like I’ve got arms that have been ripped off an Indian man and somehow perfectly rejoined to my torso.
