In a nut shell...
From Back to the Motherland in Kampala, Uganda on May 27 '08
OK so I have a little more than 48 hours left here in Uganda. I want to thank everyone for your comments and words of encouragement. Once I get back I'll be happy to share every detail with you :-) I've been journaling daily as not to forget a thing. So today I interviewed 8 more women and a different branch of my worksite. It's located in Wakiso which is the beautiful area..in the middle of no where. So I knew I wanted to update my blog today, but instead of making you cry (because I've done enough of that these last 4 weeks) I decided to compile Erika's "what i've learned since coming to africa" list. Somewhat comical but all very true! So without further delay and presented in no particular order please find below the top 15 things I have learned since coming to Africa! Enjoy!
1. Personal space is an American illusion...not many other countries will respect your "bubble"
2. Cows, chickens, turkeys, roosters, goats, and sheep are all domestic animals and are welcome to dwell in ANY living space
3. Carrying items (large and small) on your head is a very efficient way of transport
4. C.P. time is definitely inherited from Africa...NOTHING starts on time or even within the hour it's scheduled
5. Fruit as we know it are mere "mini-mes" of what grows in their natural environment
6. Don't expect to see an African Elephant just because you are in Africa :-(
7. Walking your cow...why not? They need exercise too!
8. Small children being strapped to your back like a sack of rice is a. humane, b. very convenient, c. surprisingly comforting for the child
9. Baby goats are acceptable forms of gifts
10. The word "meat" is ALL inclusive so be prepared
11. Honking your horn serves are fair warning before you hit another car, person, or bicycle
12. Africans don't quite understand the concept of a Black American
13. Hips are a coveted body feature
14. Just because an item is on the menu, display board of even in the restaurants name does not mean they actually HAVE the item.
15. Even Ugandans support Barack Obama!!!
:-)
Peace & Blessings,
Erika
