Ile de Goree

Too heavy to write about now, but here are some pix...the last time I was at Ile de Goree (when Zyck lost her camera down a pit toilet!) I was too jet lagged to really appreciate the trip. For those who don't know, the island of Goree was the last stop for Africans who were taken into slavery--they were kept in terrible quarters, shackled, and then shipped to the Americas to work on plantations. A bleak time in our history, for certain! Of course, now the island is more than just a memorial to those who passed through and passed on...it's actually a thriving artists community with lots of painters, musicians, and other craftsmen and women! We heard a wonderful Kora player, while eating yet more yassa, and also got to sample the local bissop juice.
