August Frost
From Walking & Biking Across America in Hamilton, United States on Aug 28 '07
The Bitterroot Valley. The morning ride along the river was frigid but beautiful. I woke to my tent and panniers covered with frost! Having a short and flat day, I’d planned to see a little of Darby, which I’d heard was lovely, but I spent most of the time changing a tire. A better timed annoyance one couldn’t wish for. I’m getting good at this.
In Hamilton I found another fair-and a big one too. How I love a fair! I snapped pictures and watched the square-dancers and the baked-goods auction. It's been a long time since I did any square dancing. I should sometime. And I rode the swings before I left. Something so glorious and simple will never disappoint.
On my way north the next morning, I was passed by 5 men in their 60s going my way. Two wives pack their gear for them and they asked me to stop and have lunch with them-a merry crew. They're doing the Lewis & Clark route in week long trips every year. Next year is the last stretch along the Columbia. They took down my info, promising an invite to join with them. I just may.
