On Monday night I received a message from a dear friend from college whom I have not seen in a few years. She lives in Chicago and agreed that we should try to see each other. First thing Tuesday morning I rode north to Jefferson City and made arrangements to catch an Amtrak train to St. Louis the following afternoon. This included a call to the Presbyterian church down town asking them if I could leave my bike locked there until I returned and picked it up Sunday morning. On Wednesday I had most of the afternoon to walk around town and visit the capitol building and cafes and some shops and antiques. In the capitol they have a series of busts of famous Missourians. I saw Truman, Joplin and of course Twain, but I got to touch the face of Edwin Hubble. His plaque was the only one that had to explain, not only that he identified the expansion of the universe, but what the heck that even means. The train was very late and I had time to visit some local museums, but upon departing I couldn’t see the Missouri River.
