First stop
From Land of Corn and Soybeans in Lexington, United States on Jul 25 '06
So we actually stopped before Lexington, but it was only like 10 miles or so before Lexington, and I can't remember where it was. I drove from Goldsboro up through Greensboro, through Virginia(around Wytheville), into West Virginia around Bluefield and exiting around Huntington, straight into Ashland, Kentucky, into central Kentucky before I stopped for gas and dinner. We left home around noon cause I had to continuously go back and make sure I had everything. That is not a time I would suggest leaving, mainly because we ended up on the turnpike in West Virginia around rush hour. Not that Greensboro was much better, but the turnpike was so bad I refused to drive through West Virginia on the way back. Also, MapQuest doesn't give you the number of tolls on a road, which is very important when you're in line and scrambling for change. It also helps if you have long arms so you don't half kill yourself giving the person the change you've managed to scrape out of the cup holders.
But we stopped for gas after nine hours of driving and they had a McDonald's there where we got dinner before we headed back out. They also had a convenience store attached to the McDonald's, so we stocked up on snacks and one liter Dr. Pepper's for me. Of course I had to call my mother to let her know that no one died on my watch, but I couldn't guarantee it on the next shift since everyone insisted I wasn't allowed to drive anymore. Apparently not being tired means you can't drive anymore. Which I didn't actually mind because I knew we'd have to switch in another hour or two. So David took over and drove onto Illinois, I believe, but I'll get into that later.
Now I've gone in my car and I found a receipt from Virginia, which means we stopped there first. So I think we stopped in Virginia first, then West Virginia, the Kentucky. I'm not sure anymore. Nothing to tell about them anyway, except the view is absolutely gorgeous. That and I passed about 3 gas stations on the exit before realizing it. Which is just kinda sad. But I'm going to put up the picture we took in Virginia on the way back out to the highway.
