Movie Night
From Living in Taipei in Taipei, China on Sep 02 '07
Well, it was rather rainy this weekend, so I didn’t do a whole lot. Last night, however, I did watch a terribly weird movie – “Scream of the Ants” by Mohsen Makhmalbaf. From a Chinese Blockbuster we rented a French Film about Iranians travelling to India … and along the way something was lost in translation. Some parts were in English, but the film also had huge monologues in Hindi, Persian, and French all translated into Chinese subtitles. From the best I can guess, the film is about a wealthy Iranian couple who came to India on their honeymoon looking for a spiritual awakening. For some reason the man travels around India with a kitchen chair tied to his bag. The first night he has a fight with his wife and takes his bag (and chair) to visit a prostitute – who he uses as a human table to drink wine as he sits in his chair. He then gives her all the money he and his wife have for the trip, and proceeds to have a philosophical conversation with a statue of a bull in French. He pours red wine over the statue, and himself, and attempts to drink it. Yah …the next day he is back with his wife travelling through the desert in search of a holy man. When they find the holy guru he tells them to visit the Ganges. At the river the guy has a complete mental breakdown and starts uncontrollably screaming while his wife goes bathing in the filthy river with 10 crazy butt-naked religious holymen. And then it ended … just like this entry.
