During my first week in Perth, Gavin and I made sure we explored and made the most of being a tourist! I told myself I could be a tourist for the first week and then I would have to start looking for work. So I made the most of it! We walked around Fremantle, took the ferry over to Rottnest Island and carried out many true Australian activities…stroking kangaroos, seeing kookaburras in gum trees, buying boardies and watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean.

Kings Park was the one place Holly said we couldn’t miss and as per usual she was 100% correct. The park has superb views of the city and crossing the elevated tree-top walk gave us beautiful views of the river. I am sure I will be spending a lot of time there…fingers crossed for some sun!

Gav, Holly and I spent an evening at the Old Fremantle Prison. The prison was still in operation until 1991 and we took a candlelit tour around the building. Throughout the tour we were entertained by actors playing the roles of former inmates, including the bushranger Moondyne Joe.

One of my highlights of the week was visiting WA’s aquarium, AQWA in Hilarys Boat Harbour. Looking at the sharks, turtles and stingrays swim around and over me was amazing as I walked through the underwater tunnel. Unfortunately Gav and I arrived just after 11am and we missed feeding time. Apparently the diver just enters the aquarium with a bag of meat and feeds the sharks by hand! The different marine worlds displayed the sea creatures found up and down the western coast of Australia and exploring them in their natural habitat is definitely something I want to do during my time here.

Perth is a beautiful, friendly city and I am sure I am going to enjoy my time here.
