'Promotional Fundraising'
From My very own trip around the world! in Wakefield, United Kingdom on Nov 30 '06
After tiring of the lack of work we were getting at pontins we decided we had to look further afield. So I googled live in jobs UK and came up with a company called Wesser, who provided live in jobs for people doing promotional charity fundraising. We got through the interview with flying colours and started in December. We fell in love instantly with the house (warm, reasonably clean and a shower!!) The job didnt seem too bad when we started, and the people we worked with at personalities and intelligence which was something our pontins workmates were all somewhat lacking in. Our job was essentially door knocking on behalf of St Johns Ambulance, which to begin with seemed like a really good cause. Unfortunately after coming back from working the Christmas New Year period we soon found it wasnt quite as simple as raising money for a good cause. It soon became apparent that we were simple working for a corporation who wanted to make money and had no qualms making it through getting people to believe they were donating to a good cause. No doubt St Johns is a good cause its just that it took a long while for them to get the money that people thought they were giving to them. It was quite soul destroying work as you were also working on commision, so rather than really doing it for the cause and being happy just to let people know what was going on, you actually found yourself getting angry at people if they wouldnt donate, which made you feel even more terrible when you realised that you were getting angry at people for not giving money to a corporation. It was horrible circle, hence why we failed to make a great deal of money while we there. Luckily we made some good friends, one of which is coming with us on the Pilgramige in Spain, and another who has offered us a place to stay in Thailand! So all in all a worthwhile time spent.
