Kicking Back to Another Day of Doing Nothing
From The Shadow of the Bat in Vientiane, Laos on Nov 18 '06
Waking late and feeling incredibly relaxed, we both decided that today was going to be another day of doing nothing. After showering, we decided to take a walk to find somewhere different to have breakfast in this hectic city! We stumbled across a lovely little cafe with garden surroundings. Although there is nothing to do in this quaint little capital and it's not much to look at, it's just nice to be somewhere that we can just relax without getting hassled.
Breakfast was lovely, relaxed in peaceful surroundings and no noise from traffic. That has to be the best thing about Laos. No traffic. And they have REAL cheese! No more cheese triangles! The rest of the day was spent doing as little as possible, which is really exactly what both of us needed. Reading, playing cards, napping and doing as little thinking as possible.
I have to say that I don't think I have ever had a cornish pasty that tasted like custard before!
As evening set in, our bellies began to gurgle, so we thought it would be nice to get some food from the bar that we had gone to the night before, as the menu featured many home favourites long missed. Maybe we should stick to what the locals know how to cook. Our chicken satay starter was good but then we got our main course. I have to say that I don't think I have ever had a cornish pasty that tasted like custard before! And the sour cream that we had to ask for to go with Brett's nacho's wasn't so much sour cream as cream that appeared to have been left out of the fridge for a few days. Very tasty! What a letdown!
We played a couple of games of pool after dinner, but soon decided it would be easier and cheaper to buy drinks from the mini mart next door to our hostel. And so that is what we did. We drank until the wee hours with some other people staying at the guesthouse and then finally stumbled to our tiny room to pass out on our extremely low bed.
