I'll Pass-o
From Looking for America in El Paso, United States on Aug 28 '06
Yes, we're still in Texas, but we did take a field trip to New Mexico today. We spent the day in Carlsbad, then went to the Caverns in the evening for the nightly bat presentation and watched them fly out of the cave. It wasn't the wall of screeching creatures we had anticipated, but since the population is about half of what it normally is (there were only 150,000 present tonight) due to this year's harsh summer weather, we couldn't complain. It was interesting to see them swarm in a giant spiral at the base of the cave before swooshing up and away into the night. We noticed that they looked more like birds than bats from where we were sitting, but on our way to the car, a bat flew right past Jessie's shoulder and we got a nice close look. Also today, we saw Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas, and admired the Sierra Diablo mountain range. Tomorrow we head into Arizona for more adventures!
