We figured that there would be no better way to kick of married life and our honeymoon other than with a trip to New York

Dave's cousins took us in and taught us the ways of the big city. They pointed us to all the good restaurants, shops and to the subway. We were also joined by Sanjay - another cousin from London - who is living in Toronto and decided to stop by and see us.

Dave hadn't seen his cousins for years and it was a good chance for him to catch up with them and show off his new wife. We've included some happy snaps of all of us having a picnic in Central Park and doing other fun catch up things.

Anyway enough crapping on about that - now for some crapping on about the city. So much has been said about this city that we won't say too much more. It was awesome and big - too big in fact. You get an idea of just how vast it is seeing it from the top of one of the many "block out the light" skyscrapers. We spent a few hours at the "top of the Rock"  - the Rockerfeller Centre -  and checked out the Manhattan skyline by night and day. Its beautiful during the day and magic at night (see photos).

Some of the other highlights of the city were

* eating beans, cornbread and other soul food in harlem (Bec and Des - it was just like the song)

* checking out the Manhattan skyline and walking across the Brooklyn Bridge

* watching the New York Knicks (aka the Knicker Bockers as Cinda likes to call them) kick ass over the New Jersey nets. The experience was only made better by waving our big finger (bought at the merchandise stand) wildly at pivotal moments in the game.

To the "Blingers" (Cinda's wooden spoon winning basketball team) - we did make inquiries about getting you guys an import to pick up next season, but we couldn't find any NBA players who would play for beer. There was some interest in trading Glitch for the water boy though.

* cruising past Lady Liberty on the Staten Island ferry en route to eat some Sri Lankan food

* going to a Broadway show

* trying to be cultured at the Metropolitan Museum and Museum of Modern Art

* going to see varuni's band rehearse. the band is a very cool progressive chello/beatbox/drums/japanese flute/violin outfit.

* meeting up with bansal who tried to get us drank and took us to a dodgy comedy club in greenwich village. it was actually a really cool club and greenwhich village (where the uni is) is jumping at night.  bansal was having a great hair day also

* seeing where Bob Dylan used to live on 4th st (the street of the song positively 4th st). it is a dingly apartment surrounded by sex shops

* being in a place where so many locations are referenced in songs and movies. we didnt make it to 59th st this time(simon and garfunkle - 59th st song feeling groovy), but will next time

* visiting Dave's Aunt Junia and Uncle Tiru and doing a day trip to Washington. They have some big monuments out there ..... not to mention some big political ideals to live up to

* vegan food (its everywhere in NYC) we're talking vegan cream cheese and bagels; vegan beef jerky and vegan cookies (not to mention tofurkey which is a whole other highlight really)

Need we say more? Actually, we've said quite a lot.....

nyc has a lot of choice and diversity and has plently to keep you occupied for years. it is massive (sydney 100 times over) and is very fast paced - felt a bit too much like the great capitalist dream sometimes. it was cool to be there for a couple of weeks but we are glad to be now heading to nth africa........
