To put it simply, Liverpool is a top town. In just a day you can see one of the most amazing cathedrals in the world, step back in time to the world of the Beatles, shop-to-you-drop in a modern mall, take in one of the many free museums and exhibitions, and finish it all off with a meal and a drink at one of any number of local pubs.

Liverpool Cathedral is the largest Anglican cathedral in Europe and the fifth-largest in the world. Entry to the Cathedral is free, and even the non-religious will appreciate the artistry that went into every little detail of the building's design. The stained-glass windows are divine. For a little extra cost you can go up the Cathedral's tower for spectacular views of Liverpool and beyond. It is also home to an absolutely massive pipe organ (although I must admit all I wanted to do was jump on and start playing 'Chopsticks'). The Cathedral is surrounded by St James' Gardens, used as a cemetary in the early 1820s. It too is well worth a look.

The buildings are beautiful; there is plenty to see and do; and the shopping is absolutely awesome.

From the Cathedral head to the water. Liverpool's port was once the busiest in the world. Albert Dock is a section along the Mersey that has been rejuvenated and houses a number of restaurants and attractions. There is for example the Merseyside Maritime Musuem, the International Slavery Museum, and the Tate Liverpool. There is also The Beatles Story, which gives a total history of Liverpool's most famous exports.

Finally, but perhaps most importantly, the shopping in Liverpool is fantastic (there is a four-storey Primark)! There are bargains to be had for everyone, and as soon as your feet begin to tire, you can sit down for a drink at any number of bars or restaurants. What more could you want in one day?
