Coco Beach
From East Africa ALE in Msasani, Tanzania on Aug 23 '08
Sunday was another relaxing day. Magnus, Lars and I decided to explore Coco Beach. Excellent, my first Dala Dala ride! A Dala Dala is a van used for public transport throughout the city. When riding these (and in the culture in general)there's no such thing as personal space, in fact it often seems that the goal of the dala attendants is to see how many people you can cram into one van, a bit like the phonebooth game. You often see people riding through the streets with their heads and feet securely inside the dala but their butts hanging out the doors (it's in just that position that we started our trip to Msasani and Coco Beach).
We spent an hour or 2 lounging around the beach. It was not all we had hoped it would be... I hope to find better beaches as the weeks go on. I also think the "beach club" has seen better days but the food was still acceptable. After lunch we wandered down to the end of the peninsula climbing up and down sea cliffs while pausing for photo- ops or to look for pearls.
