One reason for the time consuming shopping is that supermarkets here in Australia are located for easy access by car. This commonly results in quite a hike out of the town centre for car-less people like me.

A second reason is that I'm not so much a fan of functional food as the Australians seem to be. So it takes me quite a lot of time and effort to figure out which yoghurt is not 99% fat free (almost the whole selection is, so I finally bought Baby-yoghurt that has a fat content of more than 3% - and the additional "benefit" of the proteins being balanced similar to breast milk...)

and end up hunting down some baby food

High antioxidants, low GI-Index food and low cholesterol content seem all to be very popular. The organic products commonly available fit onto a small shelf.

What also seems to be popular are large and big sized portions of everything. I'm not going to buy half a kilogram of coleslaw and even less the 1 kg container. Meat typicaly comes in packages of 500 g or more, the trail mix of nuts in a 700 g bag (okay I bought that one - and it lastet me for a while...).

a final reason is that the supermarkets are huge and so I walk a couple of kilometers back and forth until I've got everything I want - and some other stuff didn't really want...

After some experience with shopping in the two major supermarkets woolworth and coles I have figured out what to buy out of the almost limitless number of products - and where I can find it.
