Oktoberfest!
From Jane's European Adventure! in Munich, Germany on Sep 21 '07
We arrived in munich early in the evening and checked into our hostel. It had the weirdest Key system ever...I was so confused and it took us like 10 minutes to figure out how to get it to work properly. I was rooming with Kate and Denisse cause we weren't allowed couples rooms at that particular hostel so we got in adn got ready to go out for Oktoberfest. We took the coach into town and spent awhile laughing at all the drunk people in the street. Then we got to Oktoberfest. It definitely wasn't what I had pictured in my mind. It was absolutely huge....rollarcoasters, beer tents, food stands, souvenier shops, and people EVERYWHERE. We got some food and Ash got a hat and then we walked down towards the Haufbrau Tent. PJ, Morgan, Grant and I needed money so we left to fin an ATM...on the way out, we saw a guy get completely naked and try to climb the flag pole at the entrance. I got an interesting picture. We found an ATM and then walked back into beerfest. Morgan somehow led us into the wrong tent so we spent a good 20 minutes wandering around wondering why we couldn't find anyone. We finally figured out it was the wrong tent and went back to Haufbrau. We found everyone and ordered a couple steins of beer and then we went inside. It was absolutely huge inside. We later learned that they can fit something like 10,000 people in that tent! It was so crazy! We found a table of Contiki people and went over there. pretty much everyone in the tent was standing on their tables so we did it too. We were there for a couple hours until at about 10:30 they stopped serving and around 11:30 they kicked us out. Morgan, Grant, Ash, Owen and I decided to try and get a cab but none of them would stop for us so we walked towards the subway and caught the subway back close to the hostel and then took a cab from there. Needless to say, when we woke up the next morning, I didn't feel too tiptop, but we packed up and took the bus into the centre of town (marienplatz) and had free time there. Nothing opened for an hour so we wandered around for a bit and got food and then we climbed this church tower and got a full view of the city. Then Denisse and I walked over to the church to see the Devil's footprint. Then we all met outside to watch the glockenspiel do it's thing. Since it was covered in scaffolding, it wasn't nearly as impressive as I thought it would be, but it was still pretty cool. After that, we left the city and heded out to the Austrian Tyrol
