Ok so I landed... safely.

Now, let me be the first to admit I am a disasterous travellor. Between Brisbane and Santa Rosa I managed to drop my passport, lose my tickets, have my tweezers confiscated, my face cream thrown out and pay $8.20AU for a chicken and baby spinach baguette... sorry what I ment to say was a PROCESSED chicken and baby spinach baguette! (I am caught wondering... is that even how you spell baguette??) So yes, I am a disasterous travellor.

I am going to be kind to myself today and put it down to the 5 minutes in the bathroom.

That and a surprisingly patient one. I forgot that air travel is all about waiting... that and appropriate que ettiquette (hmmm another spelling moment). The que to check in (bypassed thankfully by the electronic sysem (go QANTAS)), the que to check luggage (my pack weighed 10.2kg by the way, and the pack itelf weighs 3 kg so who says women can' travel light??), the que to buy food, the que to get on the plane... and then there is the 13 hours (plus one hour of sitting on the tarmac waiting to take off) seated on a plane with no entertainment system. Yes, thats right, no entertainment system! (NOTE: do not fly United Airlines if you cannot amuse yourself for 13 hours without going nuts).

Highlights of the flights??

* I did finally get to see the Sydney Oprah House and the Sydney Habour bridge, yes it was from a plane but darn it, Sydney just doesn't say "visit me up close"... well not to me anyway.

* I was witness to the QANTAS Pilot attempt to use the planes left wing as a wabba board whilst simultaneously hitting an air pocket just before final approach. Needless to say "sweaty palms moment"

* The Sydney trains have two levels for seating! (Is that one of those small things that amuse small minds??)

* [This one is for Jas] Ordering orange juice on an USA owned airline and being given TANG!

* Pretzels instead of peanuts.

* Being told that our destination was 7600km away, that we were flying at 1,000kms per hour (average) and that it would take 13 hours to make the trip...

Ohhh and finally the number one highlight of the flight *drum roll* reconstituted apple crumble for dessert! Is there anything the USA'ians won't dehydrate?

Yes... they really are everywhere

But I landed and I am alive and well, if not somewhat disorientated. I was greeted at the airport by my friends husband, whom I have never met, and whose English is far better then she let on. Despite all fears he looked exactly like his photo so he didn't need the hand painted sign or the flashing red light (yes he did atually bring a flashing red light along...) for me to find him :). The best part was him recognising me! The five minutes in the bathroom re-civilising myself must have worked wonders, that or every picture he has ever seen me in makes me look like I haven't slept in 24 hours. I am going to be kind to myself today and put it down to the 5 minutes in the bathroom.

Highlights of the drive to Santa Rosa??

* Crossing the Golden Gate bridge and seeing Alcatraz

* [This one is for Meggan] Finding out my best friends husband loves bats!

* Finally getting to meet my friends husband (he does exist... there was some doubt)

Or are fictional characters following me??

* The welcome hug when I finally arrived "home"

An interesting fact about Santa Rosa - it is the birth place of the guy who wrote Charlie Brown comics, yes indeedy - and in true United States style there are little shrines to him everywhere... in the shape of charlie Brown statues. Steeped in Amricana history this sizeable little town is a curious mix of heritage and modern USA. On its doorstep are Redwood forests and being this close to the great city of San Fran you just know Santa Rosa is bursting with Artistic Talent. I will be in this delightful little hamlet for 11 days so stay tuned.

Hugs

My Dearest Vix I will be kind to you today being jet lagged and all and won't mark you harshly for spelling errors! Mind you, I unfortunately am not perfect in this arena, I know, I know, me declaring an imperfection, but I will put that moment of weakness down to counting down the hours until you took off, landed, found the Sydney International terminal, took off and landed yet again and found your way to a safe abode and then contacted me. Phew, don't know about you but I'm exhausted.... You may be interested to know....or not...that your sibling (who can be seen on Youtube - search "scottykamm")when had her first port of call did not go shopping but called home... travel is totally wasted on some as was the phone call as she only got the answering machine and left this very long convoluted message on how to ring her and can I? So, needless to say I did try ringing but I'm sure the boat (oops ship) does not have enough phones to handle all the traffic. Does no one have anything better to do while cruising than to ring friends and family? Anyway, i digress majorly and I can feel your yawns from here - after reading this do not think you cannot ring home (you remember our number right?)I will not catalogue your homesickness if you even get time to remember you have a home or hearth to go to (we do get almost one week at Christmas don't we?)Miriam won't kidnap you forever will she and isn't it nice her hubby is really real - he is isn't he? Not someone just popping in from another dimension for a short stay - Miriam's imaginary friend, fiance, husband - you know she dabbles in exotic science experiments so he may yet be one....... Well one never knows does one because as you say those good ole USAians can reconstitute just about anything... I will expect many photos and superb dialogue inventoring your excursions through the USA and Guatemala and then Italy. I will be checking daily because I cannot help myself - it is a sad sad fact that I live vicariously through others mainly becasue I am a wimp and way too tight to spend time or money on something I really don't have to do....and it is probably more fun hearing about it rather than experiencing 13 hours of total claustrophobia and mind numbing fear. Having kids is living too close to the edge for me! So, my adventurous one, regale me with your exploits into down town markets of Santa Rosa and Guatemalan prehistory. I await with bated breath - probaly provoke and asthma attack doing that but I await....... Love, huggles and kisses Me

ohhh comments :) I love comments, especially when they're from my favourite group of people - 'friends and family' :D mamma kat, I am missing you and the rest of the litter terribly. So thankyou for posting a little bit of home. (And the random Tammy Ad was hilarious - btw fellow readers, my sister on youtube is highly recomended viewing!) I promise pics and me actually seeing stuff soon. Roger!! Long time no hear muppet. :) Thanx for the spelling tip, I really have no idea what I ment, I was so tired on the day. Santa Rosa weather wise is about 25 degrees celcius, slight breeze and warm sun shine. Beautiful! I'll be sure to take a picture so u can bask in Californian sunshine in your English apartment. hugs to all

I fly United Airlines quite often, and they've always had one of those little screens on the seat in front of you - bummer that they didn't have one on your flight! The food is always terrible though. I usually take chocolate just in case. I think you meant 'queue' ;) I shall look forward to more news from Santa Rosa - I'm assuming it's hot and hazy (chilly and rain here in England, brrrr) roger xx
