The last stop in Venezuela
From Simon's South American Adventure! in Santa Elena De Uairen, Venezuela on Aug 08 '07
So after witnessing the incredible Angel Falls we returned briefly to Ciudad Bolivar to pick up our remaining luggage and then head down south to our last stop in Venezuela, a small town called Santa Elena.
In terms of actual points of interest, there weren´t that many because this town was effectively a stop-off before we entered Brazil, where we chilled out, drank lots of beers, washed some extremely smelly laundry, and did some Internet stuff.
However, during our time here we did go and explore some of the Gran Sabana, which included taking a huge walk in the sweltering heat eventually leading to a pretty nice blue lagoon with stereotypical rope swing attached so that we could mess about for a while. We also visited some small, but quite cramped, caves and did the old exploring bit, where you had to hold the torch in your mouth and watch where your feet were being placed or else you may fall into a large crevass. After all this we were knackered so headed back to our hostel and had our first decent nights sleep for a good while (i.e. we got to stay in bed later than 7am).
We also went to see a couple more waterfalls, but as nice as they were, they weren´t a patch on Angel Falls and so ultimately, weren´t very impressive. From here we went over the border into Brazil and travelled through Boa Vista before arriving into Manaus, a port town situated on the Amazon River, on 12th August (or Day 11 of the trip).
