Home of seafood...mmmmmmm
From Venture to the unknown in Port Macquarie, Australia on May 04 '07
We arrived at our next hick port of call, the port of Macquarie...Port Macquarie...and we were stranded for the first 15mins or so as we awaited our long pick up people to arrive. Once they had it was the shortest of journey's back to the accommodation so to be honest i really do wonder what the guy was up to to take so god darn long! Nevertheless we arrived safe and sound and i guess that's the most important part. Now the accommodation was a strange thing to state you may say, as everyone knows that backpackers stay in hostels etc. but this had a twist. As it is not really on the backpacker map of what to do and wher to go this was a getaway predominantly for the Aussies, getting away from the cities and into the country, therefore we were on a caravan site with make shift backpacker area which was just a large cabin full of beds, but we occupied the room which was rather nice.
Port Macquarie was a stop to save money and chill for a few days as to a) prepare for the onslaught that is Sydney and b) not have to be on a coach for 9hrs straight...IF NOT MORE! The coach journey's are long winded and when being woken up at most every four hours sleep is not really an option; dozes yes, and mightily uncomfortable, but sleeping? No.
Whilst there we just wandered around aimlessly, popping into shops and i was able to sample the much raved about seafood and although the first day we were only able to find a dive of a chinese take away placet the seafood was divine and very fresh. The following day we went for a wander along the promenade and found some more upmarket dives and some prim and proper restaurants which seemed to serve the most luscious looking food so we went to the upmarket dive as true backapckers and the seafood was sampled once more and i must say was delicious! Some proper food, just what the doctor ordered!
The rest of our time in between feeding times were spent chilling, reading and having shits and giggles until our departure was due at 5pm which meant a lovely arrival in Sydney just before midnight. Well, the bright lights of this supposedly vast metropolis beckons and we shall see how we go in what people so often mistake for Australia's capital city.
