We travelled from Santiago to La Serena. It was a long day on the Pan American Highway. We arrived about 5:30 at our campsite near the beach and we stayed at the hippo camping grounds. Nothing too exciting, but it was clean. Next day we explored La Serena. It seemed like quite a nice little town until the bus loads of american tourists arrived from the cruise ship in harbour. Literally hundreds. We found some lovely markets and a great museum. We were surprised to find a great japanese garden there also. Well kept with ducks and swans and a heron who posed for some photos. The beach looked very inviting but it was overcast so we didn´t hang around and do any sunbathing.
