From Vilcabamba we took a morning bus to Loja and from there a bus to Cuenca (total journey of 7+ hours).

Cuenca was founded in 1557 on the site of the Inca settlement of Tomebamba (2,530m). Much of its colonial air has been preserved, with many of its old buildings constructed of the travertine stone quarried nearby and recently renovated. In 1999 Cuenca was designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Â´new´ (1885) Cathedral de la Immaculada is an amazing sight and its interior consists of Italian marble.
