Day Trip to Fraser Island
From Semester In Australia in fraizer island, Australia on Feb 08 '07
Our trip to Fraser Island was an all day event. We woke up early for a big breakfast and were loaded onto buses. The buses were nice on the inside, a lot like coach buses, but the front of the bus was like a semi-truck. All the buses we were taking had 4 wheel drive. This was because it is faster to get to Fraser Island by drving on the highways which are on the beach. We drove along the beach for a few hours and took a ferry across to the island. All the roads on Fraser were made by logging and mining companies that no longer work on the island. They were all soft sand roads. This made for an extremely bumping ride. There were times when I thought the bus was going to tip over. Every seat had a seatbelt that had to be worn. The first stop of the day was at Lake McKenzie. This is a large fresh water lake on the isalnd. It is called a dune perch lake because the lake is made completely of rain water that has accumulated in between large sand dunes. The water was incredibly blue and clear. The sand looked like snow it was so white. We had lunch at the beach and enjoyed swimming in the warm water. The water in Lake McKenzie also had higher ph levels so it was really good for your skin and hair. After our swim at McKenzie we headed further into the island to the rainforest. We stopped at Central Station, it used to be a logging station. The rainforest was incredible. The trees were huge and bright green while the creek that was running through it was the clearest water I have ever seen. The island has over 300 different species of gum trees. The gum trees are huge trees with white bark. While we were walking through we saw an eel in the creek and a kukaburra. There were also tons of really big butterflies that were flying all over. The walk through central station was the last thing that we did on the island. Fraser Island was world heritage listed in 1992 and Lake

McKenzie was ranked one of the top ten places to swim in the world! The Island was incredible and worth the long bumpy bus ride!
