The started at 6am with a two-hour bus ride up to over 4200m.  It was a bit chilly at the top, but we had a ceremonial nip of Puro (basically rubbing alcohol that the locals drink - fire water).  Opting for the all-inclusive package ($75 - ouch!), I was outfitted with a Kona bike with front and back suspension, helmet, gloves, protective pants and jacket, goggles and a ´buff´ for warmth and to protect you from the dust further down the road.

The top section was great fun as it was extremely fast riding on mainly asphalt.  The day was mainly overcast, so visibility was a bit limited.  Too bad, as some of the views off the various precipices you ride by are supposed to be quite amazing.  With frequent stops to regroup, we learned a bit more about the various fatalities that occur regularly along the route. (A bus had gone over the edge in September, killing all on board).  Apparently the road claims about one vehicle a month, thus, the most dangerous road in the world!

Even though I am scared of heights, I found the experience quite enjoyable.  Perhaps it´s because I could see much through the thick mist.  At any rate, achieved some good speed and adrenaline rush.  The lower section proved to be navigatable and a bit more dusty.  At the end, we enjoyed a relaxing meal within the lush surroundings of Coroico (together with some friendly animals, including parrots, dogs and monkeys).  Tired, but strangely energized (could it be the Coca?), headed by to La Paz to prepare for my departure to Ururo the next day.

Andrew, the bike ride must have been energizing and exhausting all at the same time. Congrats on completing the ride...your pictures are amazing; especially the view from the top. So glad you're soaking in such incredible views, cultures, and experiences! News on my end - accepted an offer from a boutique firm. Will forward my new contact info once I start there - December 4th. Smiles :)
