El Jadida

We drove from Taghazoute to Safi taking the coast road from Essaouira, which we had heard was very scenic. It was scenic - until the road disappeared into several kilometres of destroyed road that was barely driveable. This added at least an hour to our journey so I strongly recommend the main motorway route.

We spent a night in Safi at a reasonable site and saw a nice sunset and the lights of the city. Next day we drove the coast road to El Jadida, which was much better.

El Jadida is a former Portuguese city and is famed for its walled Citadel. The Citadel is quite small and within it is the Cistern. An old underground building used to store water for the city. The building has curved ceilings with a single large skylight in the centre - it used to hold 4 million litres of water when full. I was very impressed with it but I don’t think Claire was so sure :-)

We had a nice lunch at a café on the beach and bought a whole cooked crab from a fisherman (the ‘soleman’) who came around our campsite. Yummy!

Dave.
